Let’s be honest, it’s probably once in a blue moon that you normally see the kids. Suddenly you are struggling to get then out from under your feet as you come to terms with being confined for the next 3 weeks.
Your home broadband it’s now going to take the ultimate test, with all family members using it at once.
Not only are you connecting your work laptop, but your partner has their tablet, a phone and then there are the kids. From game consoles to Netflix your broadband can quickly become a headache.
So Northern I.T have put together a few tips to help you
- Changing your WiFi Channel
These settings can be checked within the router but being channels 1, 6 or 11 prevents cross interference from other Wi-Fi networks such as your neighbours.
A simple WiFI scanner available from the PlayStore will scan your area for you and give you this information. Follow your router user guide, contact your ISP and try changing your channel. This will be a matter of trial and error.
- Positioning your router in the best location
Place your router in a high position and in the most central location of the house.
This will evenly disperse the signals and reduce the distance they need to travel back to your devices.
- Stay away from walls
Radio signals best travel through open air, concrete walls will absorb the signal whereas drywalls will allow more of the signal to pass through.
- 2.4GHZ or 5GHZ
2.4GHZ will penetrate walls better but other devices in your house, eg baby monitors, interfere with the signal. So 5Ghz does not have a better range but it provides a faster speed.
- Check your Broadband plan
It could be that your broadband cannot cope with the extra demand. A simple Broadband Speed Test will tell you. (NOTE : YOU MUST USE A NETWORK CABLE (Ethernet) TO CONNECT YOUR LAPTOP/PC DIRECTLY TO YOUR ROUTER)
- Cable is the King
Should the worst come to the worst, A network cable is king and may speed up the wireless devices in your household. The fewer signals traveling through the air, the better.
